A Lecture Starts from A Lamp——Campus Activity of AALD

Lighting creates different atmosphere for different functional spaces in a building, therefore, a good lighting design can make architects more brilliant. On the evening of March 15th, co-hosted by School of Architecture, South China University of Technology (SCUT) and Asian Association of Lighting Designers, organized by Yang Guang Media, the academic seminar, named “Architecture and Lighting” was successfully held in the campus of SCUT. The faculty, students and also the members of AALD took part in this seminar.



The lecture was emcee by Bian Yu, lecturer of the school, and also Shi Hengzhao, general manager of J+B Studios Architecture Lighting, was invited to present his idea of lighting and architecture. On this seminar, Mr. Shi illustrated the responsibility of being a professional lighting designer, on the basis of the owner’s need, development of the industry and a general view of the society, by analyzing the requirement of interior lighting design from specific cases, covering the design concept, methods, regulation and also energy conservative standard, etc.

 

On this seminar, Mr. Shi encouraged these students who majored in Architecture, to pursue a job as a lighting designer, with his own story. He raises an interesting example, “As an architect, we may not be able to meet with our idol, the giants in this field. However, as a lighting designer, we have many opportunities to cooperate with these people.” Hu Lin, a lecturer of the school conducted an active conversation with Mr. Shi, about the issue of integrating architecture and lighting, an also the training of talents, etc.

 

The seminar lasted about two hours, and ended in an applause. As a professional lighting designer with profound experience in design, Mr. Shi impressed the attendants deeply for his professional and detailed analysis, also his humor. The sharing of cases on the seminar not only enriched the experience of the designers, but also provided the students with a vivid case and practice, improved their understanding of professional lighting design, which make them more enthusiastic at lighting design. After the seminar, lots of students were still actively communicating with Mr. Shi, and raised some question they came across during studying, looking for the way of effective learning. The host built up a platform of communication and idea exchanging for designers and students in campus through this seminar.

The AALD’s campus activity aims at professional training for university students, offering those young students who would love to develop as professional lighting designers a channel of learning and a platform of communication. Besides, AALD also recruits student members, providing them with more professional information and opportunity of studying.
